| Museum Renovations Moving Right Along Excitement is running high among members and others who have witnessed the renovation of the Webster County Historical Museum over the past few months. Thanks to the grant we received from Webster Electric Co-op, the biggest remodeling projects are nearing completion. The plaster ceiling has been replaced and repainted, and updated wiring replaced the old "spool and cable" original to the 1911 structure. Light fixtures very similar to the original "schoolhouse" style have been installed upstairs, and the walls have been repaired and repainted. Much of the basement area has been remodeled, also with a new ceiling in the hall and large main room, made even larger by the removal of a partition wall. The north bathroom has also been updated. A tremendous amount of work cleaning and preparing shelves, cases, and floors await those willing to volunteer their services. The work already completed could not have taken place without the help of many volunteers, who will be given special recognition at the open house we are planning to celebrate the completion of this phase of the renovation project. Thanks to everyone for helping us meet our goal of reopening the first part of May! On a related note, there will be a Museum work day on Saturday, March 25 for anyone interested in helping out. Doors will open at 9 a.m., and all cleaning supplies will be provided. You need only bring a good supply of elbow grease! For more information, call the Museum Director at 859-2036. Thanks! |

Meeting Programs set for Quarter The Historical Society has been having some very interesting programs at our monthly meetings and we will continue to during the next quarter. In March, our Historian, Mable Masters, will share the highlights of her collection of photos, newspaper clippings, and other memorabilia on Marshfield homes and businesses. Since undertaking the project a few months ago, Mable and her helpers have amassed an impressive collection filling two large notebooks. April's program will feature Bid Young, one of our most senior members and a very knowledgeable historian. He will talk briefly about his 17 weed of basic infantry training in Texas during World War II. From basic training, Bid went to the European Theatre and served there the remainder of the war. Steve Page has agreed to present our program in May, and we look forward, as always, to a very interesting presentation from him. All members and non member guest are welcome to attend these meetings. If we have inadvertently omitted your name from any list in this newsletter, please accept our apology and make us aware of the omission. Membership dues are payable January 1 each year. Annual dues are $5 per person, and a lifetime membership is available for $50 per person. Proceeds from the dues go toward the upkeep of the Museum and expenses of the Society. We appreciate your membership and your support of the Society. |

| Museum News The Webster County Historical Museum will open in May with a special exhibit of antique radios, victrolas, and the like, as well as old linens. Also, as part of the general museum display, there will be areas designated for memorabilia on rural schools, Del Massey and our county's black history, agriculture, county businesses and schools, and much more. If you have items to loan or donate, please bring them to the Museum in April of contact a Society member. |
The Historical Society has received a request to provide information on any water-powered grist mills known to
have existed in Webster County. If you are aware of the location and/or history of any of these mills, please
contact Linda Blazer at 859-2036 as soon as possible. Thank you. Although 2000 dues were payable in January, we are still accepting membership renewals (as well as new members all year long). Reminder: annual dues are $5 per person, lifetime membership is $50 per person. |
Wright County Census The Wright County 1850 Census is now complete and can be viewed on the Wright County Historical Society web page. The census also included the 1850 Slave and Mortality schedules, as well as additional data, pictures, and marriage bonds on many households. This will be of particular interest to those who had families residing in the eastern one-half of what is now Webster County. It will be available in book form in about a month and is a joint effort of Gloria Carter and the Wright County Historical Society. For more information, contact Gloria at: gbcarter@juno.com |
