Society to Honor Charter Members

Or next meeting will be held at historic Walnut Springs Farm on September 28, at 7:00 p.m. We will be honoring the people who organized the very first Historical Society in Webster County.

The Society began in 1952 with 98 charter members, all of whom are listed onthe back of this newsletter. It was established in order to make preliminary plans to celebrate Webster County's Centennial in 1955. We owe a lot to the original members. Of those, 10 are still living, most are active in our community and some in the Society itself.

Also featured at the meeting will be the reenactment of a pie auction from days gone by. some of us have never had the pleasure of attending such a function, so we would appreciate sharing the found memories of those of you who can.

We need all of you Society bakcer (that includes the men) to really put forthe the effort into some of your best pies. Homemade ice cream will also be available. All money raised will go to help furnish our Resource Room at the Museum.

Let's all come out and pay tribute to the pioneers of our Society. Bring your lawn chairs, pies, appetizers, and your friends!

Newsflash!

We have just been informed that the Museum will receive a partial grant from Webster Electric in the amount of $6,550, to be used to plater, insulate, and paint the interior of the building.

Many of you may already know that the long awaited Webster County history book arrived the last week of June. Everyone invloved was quite pleased with the finished product, and reception has been good with the general public. Sales have topped 700 copies and the remaining books will go quickly. The new double volume, Historical Book can still be purchased for $65.00 Plus $5.00 mailing fee. If you have intended to buy one, do not wait too long - they may be sold out!

Books are available at the Museum, Whitehurst Insurance, and Paula's Antiques.

Resource Room

Thanks to the generosity of private donors, the Resource Room in the basement of the Museum has recently received a facelift. Concrete repairs and painting are complete, and we will soon be ready to move in. This room will house old records, newspapers, and items of genealogical interest. Plans are to eventually make these available for viewing by the public.

The Society is soliciting donations of any genealogy research materials, family histories, and books, as well as equipment for the room such as four-drawer filing cabinets, copying machine, etc. Anyone wishing to donate items please contact Paulene Dyche at 859-7700 or Linda Blazer at 859-2036.

A new, revised, topical index of the Historical Society Jornals has recently been completed. This index may be accessed at the Museum or by writing to us at the above address. Mailing of the index is free, and the Journals are $2 plus postage.

Anyone needing transportation or directions to this month's (or any) meeting, please call:

The Missouri Route 66 Association made its way across Missouri on September 11 during their annual trek down Historic Route 66. The entourage, which included about 150 vintage vehicles, began in St. Louis and ended in Miami, Okalhoma, with the tour following old Route 66 through Webster County. It is hoped that our Society can plan some special activities for next year's tour.
If you have a new "911" address, please pass is on to the Society.
